RUNNERS of all abilities are being sought to take part in the Swindon Half Marathon to support the British Heart Foundation.

Thousands of runners are expected to run in the 13-mile event which is taking place on October 12. Last year, the half marathon raised £100,000 for the charity, which helps treat heart conditions.

The half marathon will start in the Nationwide headquarters car park, in Pipers Way, at 10.30am with registration costing £21 for those affiliated to running clubs and £23 for non-members.

Runners need to be over 17 to take part in the half marathon, but there is a five-mile multi-terrain run and a two-mile fun run also being held. There is also a half marathon for wheelchair users.

Alistair Hills, the British Heart Foundation’s regional events organiser, said: “The preparation is going very well. We are crossing the Ts and dotting the Is with regards to road closures and then we are having a big push on registration.

“It is key to the half marathon to get lots of local support like we have in previous years. The event is 10 weeks away so there is still plenty of time for people to sign up and start training.”

As part of runners’ registration they will receive training guidance and fundraising advice with everyone who completes the course being given a medal.

“Participants will also receive a timing chip which will record their runs.

Alistair said: “This is very much an event for all the family. We are delighted to welcome people to cheer on the runners but families could also take on our fun run and do their bit.

“The event has been going for 10 years and we expect to welcome between 2,500 and 3,000 runners this year.

“We hope the Half Marathon will continue to grow and we can welcome even more people in the coming years.

“It is great to see the people of Swindon get behind the event as the money raised goes to help people locally.”
