Car crashes into community hall

Emergency services were called to the building, in The Street, after a black Lexus went through the wall at 6.38am.

The 30-year-old man driving the vehicle was checked over by paramedics but was uninjured.

An office in the building was substantially damaged following the incident, as was the car.

A building inspector was called to the Swindon Council centre and cordoned off the hole in the wall.

The damaged area will be knocked down this morning and the premises will remain open as normal.

Moredon Community Centre’s treasurer, Hannah Gilbert , said: “Thankfully, as it was early in the morning there was nobody in the building at the time of the incident.

“Obviously a lot of people who live near to the centre saw what happened and alerted us to the incident.

“The whole of the office is now out of use and will be knocked down and properly secured.

“We are really pleased to say that we’ll be able to open as normal over the weekend. We have three bookings in the hall and we want to ensure that the parties know that the events will go ahead as planned.

“We are thankful that we can stay open and of course that the driver wasn’t injured.

“It was also very fortunate that nobody was walking in front of the wall at the time of the incident.”

Swindon Council will assess the damage today and estimate how much it will cost the authority to repair.

A council spokesman said: “The Moredon Community Centre was inspected by a surveyor from our property team.

“Apart from the office that was damaged, the rest of the building is structurally sound and no activities there are affected, as the building can remain open with the exception of the office.

“The area has been cordoned off and the community group that runs the centre will organise appropriate internal signage to prevent unauthorised people getting to the damaged area. Repairs will be carried out as soon as possible.”

Wiltshire Police are investigating the incident and anyone with information is asked to call 101.
