Travellers set up camp at Lydiard Park

First published in News by

TRAVELLERS have moved into the grounds of Lydiard Park – and could stay for a c ouple of weeks.

The family of travellers moved onto the fields close to Hook Street on Saturday morning and say they are staying temporarily while they attend a family funeral in the area.

Users of the park have complained they have been either displaced or are unable to walk their dogs in the area.

Police and Swindon Council are monitoring the situation to see if any action is necessary.

A member of staff at Lydiard Park, who wished to remain anonymous, said: “They turned up at about midnight on Friday night, and they have set up seven vans at the far end of the field.

“Members of the public have come up to us already, saying they can’t go walking their dogs over there because all the travellers’ dogs are running loose.

“One lady has come over to speak to us to say that one of the vans has been spinning round in the field churning it up.”

The park staff member added: “It’s a tricky situation because this is public land, so it is down to Swindon Council what to do about it.

“Apparently they were evicted from another site just down the road the night before, so they have come down here.

“We get a lot of people up there walking their dogs and playing with their kids, and that whole area is pretty much out of bounds now.”

Belinda Dowding had rented a spot on the fields for the weekend but found her family displaced by the group.

“That was supposed to be our spot when we got here but obviously we couldn’t use it,” she said. “Lydiard Park have been very accommodating and very very kind to allow us a new spot.

“There was supposed to be a hot-air balloon launch today but that has had to be cancelled now as well.”

The travellers said they were in the area for a family funeral. “We will only be here for a few days and two weeks at the most,” said one of the group, who refused to give his name.

“We get tracked around everywhere like pigs anyway.”

Coun Cindy Matthews (Lab, Lydiard and Freshbrook) said: “This is the first time this has happened during my time as councillor. The police have got new powers and will give them three days before they go and assess the situation. The park warden has been aware and has received a number of complaints.

“Police have been to the site, and if it continues we will have to see what needs to be done working with them.”

Sgt Barry Reed, duty inspector for Swindon, said: “If we were to take any action we would need a complaint from the landowner, which in this case is the council.

“They would have to serve notice on the travellers, and for us to do anything about it we would have to be satisfied there are issues regarding noise, the number of vehicles, or any damage to property taking place.

“We will be monitoring the situation and working alongside the council to see what action if any would need to be taken.”

Why Oh Why has this article been brought to the top of the internet page again when the previous identical article has already attracted 42 comments?

I dare not make comment about the content of the article because my factual observations of these people would probably amount to a criminal offence of stirring up racial hatred or some such nonsense - the freedoms that our forefathers died for have been surrendered by successive governments.

They will also leave behind a filthy mess that council tax payers will have to fund to clear up.

So don't visit the web site if it annoys you so much! That way their site hits will go down and they will lose advertisers - which is the sole purpose of the site.

To repeat what I said when this story was originally posted, occupying this site on a Friday evening on a bank holiday was a smart move as no-one will take action at the Council until Tuesday at the earliest. Because that is a "permanent" site which is pretty much always full (how you can be a traveller with a permanent home seems rather a contradiction but that's for another day). I wonder if a resident of Swindon pitched up there in a caravan how long it would take before they were moved on? I bet it would be a d4mn sight quicker than it takes to move travellers on! There should be far stronger powers of trespass to get people moved. If you don't own the land or have express permission to be there you should be able to be moved on instantaneously! I bet if they pitched up in a judges back garden they would be gone before dark..........

I believe if you look at the price comparison between a house in Grange Park which has walking access to the country park compared to a identical house elsewhere. I think that's the "Premium" talked of.

As the the equality subject.
"The courts have said that Romany Gypsies and Irish Travellers are protected against race discrimination because they’re ethnic groups under the Equality Act."
Romany Gypsies are clean and it appears we must be nice to them if they're Irish. For anything else worth asking what they are then we know if we're "Allowed" to slag them off.

So you pay more for a location next to a public park that anyone can go to? You pay more to live next to a nice park...So its the location the same as every other piece of property that is bought?
So not a premium as previously mentioned?

White Caucasians are an ethnic group too but I bet they would be moved on far quicker than other "groups". Minorities seem to rule nowadays. They say they want equality but what they actually want is to have some special status and they get away with it. I don't care who they are, if you don't have a legal right to be somewhere you should be moved on instantly.

And to all those who criticise the comments on the other thread, I bet if they pitched up in your back garden or your driveway you would be straight on the phone demanding they were moved. Always easier to be "caring" when it is on someone else's doorstep and not a direct problem to you!
