ALMOST 5,000 people in Swindon have registered to vote in a new service that allows them to do it online.

Earlier this year, rules for registering were changed meaning every individual is now responsible for registering, as opposed to one person per household.

To make it easier a new online system has been introduced, which has proved popular among voters.

Sally Sprason, Swindon Council’s electoral services manager, said: “It is a service which has only just started but so far it is going well. Under the old system, when one person was responsible, people were reliant on others to ensure they were registered. Often in rented houses, for example, the landlord may have the registry form but not put all of the tenants on.

“Now each individual can do it and being able to do it online makes it even easier and quicker.”

The new system was introduced as a way of making sure the voting register remains accurate. Over the past decade the number of people who had correctly registered to vote was gradually decreasing, although this effect had not been seen in Swindon.

“Since I came into the position, the Swindon electoral register has largely remained where we expected so we have not seen the national changes,” said Sally.

“The new online registration system means we can target everyone, most notably those living in shared accommodation. With each person being able to do it themselves this will hopefully solve the problem.”

Sally said reaction to the changes has been overwhelmingly positive from people who have contacted them.

She said: “It has been a lot easier when people phone up to simply direct them online, which is something they have liked as well.

“Another benefit is the money it has saved. Previously we had to print a form and send it out along with a return envelope, which all adds up.”
