10 THINGS TO DO IN AND AROUND SWINDON THIS WEEKEND

Swindon Railway Festival, at STEAM, on Saturday and Sunday from 10am to 5pm. Now in its thirteenth year, the big GWR event sees railway fans of all ages come together to celebrate all things railways. Entry is £10 for adults and £7.50 for children. Call 01793 466637.

  • Wartime Weekend, at Swindon and Cricklade Railway, on Saturday and Sunday from 11am to 5pm. A themed WW2 weekend, filled with attractions and entertainment for the family. Call 01793 771615.
  • Last Night of the Proms, at Wharf Green on Saturday from 6pm to 10.30pm. The Big Screen is broadcasting the event for free.
  • Highworth Triathlon at Highworth Rec, from 8am on Sunday. The event is a great race for beginnings and experienced athletes alike. Entry starts at £30. Call 01793 762602.
  • An Evening of Dirty Dancing, on Sunday from 7.30pm at the Wyvern. This is the original tribute to the movie soundtrack. Tickets are £19. Call the Box Office on 01793 524481.

  • Proms in the Park, Friday night, from 5pm to 11pm, with live music from 5.30pm to 7.15pm to set the atmosphere. Guests should bring their own picnic blankets, although there will be a limited number of picnic tables available for reservation.  Call 01793 731302.
  • The Flying Pig Festival 2014, at Sandhill Farm Airfield, Shrivenham, from Friday until Sunday. A family festival with over 20 live bands, skydive display and lots of children’s entertainment. Tickets are £20 for the weekend. Visit www.flyingpigfestival.co.uk
  • The Vision 4 Wroughton and Friends will host the Late Summer Picnic at Willow Brook Gardens on Saturday from 1pm to 5pm. There will be entertainment and hot and cold refreshments available.
  • Summer Fete at Churchfields Academy on Saturday from 10am to 2pm, to celebrate the school’s 50th year. Enjoy a range of activities including a bouncy castle, face painting, cake and craft stalls and tours for former students and staff from 2pm to 5pm.
