PHOEBE Maddison’s ambition to top the music charts could become a reality much sooner than she ever imagined.

Her first single has been recorded to raise money for vital research into diabetes, a condition that the yongster herself suffers from.

The nine-year-old, of Groundwell West, travelled to Barry in Wales last month for an eight-hour studio session to produce My Life, a song highlighting the daily struggles facing Type 1 diabetics.

The lyrics to the song are taken from young patients’ own accounts of their condition.

The single is due to be released in October and Phoebe, a passionate performer and Stagecoach student, is hoping to make it to number one by Christmas and raise valuable funds for JDRF, the world’s largest charity committed to finding a cure for Type 1 diabetes.

“It was amazing. I just had so much fun,” she said of the experience. “I felt like it was a great opportunity to raise awareness.

“It would be my dream to get a number one at Christmas.”

The track was written by Steve Paxton, who was inspired to compose the song after seeing Phoebe perform at the Pop 4 Diabetes ball.

Phoebe added: “The song uses the words of children who are diabetic. It’s letting them express themselves. It’s very powerful and emotional and tells you what diabetes is really about.

“Sometimes even family members don’t think having diabetes is much of a big deal. But it’s life-threatening, and we need to get the message out there.”

Although still in primary school, Phoebe is no stranger to fame.

On a mission to shine the spotlight on her often-misunderstood condition, she starred in BBC 2’s Same But Different, a documentary following children with Type 1 diabetes and their constant fight to stay healthy.

The programme went on to win an award last February at the International Emmy Kids Awards in New York.

The release of the single was the natural next step for Phoebe who has used her powerful voice to raise awareness of the condition for as long as the family can remember.

“Steve Paxton has a son with Type 1 diabetes,” said Phoebe’s dad Antony. “He saw her perform at Pop 4 Diabetes and wrote the song for her. It’s quite a special thing.

“This was her first solo recording. Phoebe wants to do what she can to raise as much money as possible for diabetes.

“She is very talented and I’m really proud.”
