DETECTIVES have another 48 hours to quiz the 29-year-old female murder suspect being held in connection with the house fire which killed a man in Albion Street on Wednesday night.

Police have 24 hours from the time a suspect is arrested to question them before either releasing or charging them.

When officers feel it is necessary they can go before a court and apply for a formal extension to the time a suspect can be detained.

This morning DCI Sean Memory was in court and has been granted another 24 hours, with the option of a further 24, to quiz the murder suspect.

“The case is still progressing,” he said. “There is an awful lot of work to be done. We are working through it as effectively as we can.

“It has proved a difficult scene to pick through because of the heat still in the building.

“We are still working on determining the cause of the fire. Experts, who were there yesterday, will be there again today resuming their work.

“This extension gives us a reasonable amount of time to continue with our questioning and enquiries.”

DCI Memory, who is leading the investigation for Wiltshire Police, confirmed the woman was not related to Michael Redpath, the deceased.

He has also confirmed she resides in Crombey Street, and was not arrested at the scene of the crime.

“She is the only person we have questioned thus far, though we are keeping an open mind as to who may be responsible,” he said.

The search for evidence has widened too. Officers were spotted in Whitehead Street yesterday, combing the area for evidence which might be connected with the investigation.
