QUIZ team members from the Ashford Road Club put their heads together to take top spot at a prestigious competition – but the team are no ordinary quizzers.

With members including a BBC TV ‘Egghead’, plus former Who Wants to Be a Millionaire and Mastermind contestants, the team won the Working Men’s Club and Institute Union championships, which took place in Derby, last week.

Made up of members Kevin Ashman, Tim Westcott, Eric Kilby and Keith Andrew, they used their experience, gained through 25 years of competition, to take the title by one point over a team from Newport.

For their efforts, the Ashford Road Club team received a trophy, a crate of beer and £500.

Tim, 55, from Swindon, said: “We are really pleased to have won and I think it is great for the club.

“As a team we have specialist fields and we seem to complement each other very well.

“Over the last 20 years, we’ve had a pretty consistent line up and done well in that time.”

The team had previously won the competition in 2008 and 2012, and are also the reigning European Club champions.

Their members have won a lot of trophies and made several appearances on TV quiz shows.

In 2006, Tim won £125,000 on ITV’s Who Wants to Be a Millionaire? gameshow, while Eric has appeared on Mastermind four times and Kevin – one of BBC TV’s Eggheads, has won the quiz world championships four times.

They all hail from the Swindon area, except Kevin, a close friend of the others, who lives in Hampshire.

This weekend, the team will be competing in a national quiz at Wolverhampton Wanderers Football Club’s Molineux Stadium.

Tim, who specialises in sport, said: “We aren’t too sure how we’ll do this weekend as Kevin and Eric are away, so we are drafting in some other members.

“They are younger than us though, so could do well in answering questions on new music.”

Many of the team’s trophies are on proudly displayed at the Ashford Road Club.

Sue Carr, club secretary, said: “We are very proud that they represent the club and play for us. I’m really pleased to see them do well.

“They regularly come in here and practise for their big events. I don’t quite know how they do so well but they’re excellent.

“They don’t compete in our little monthly quizzes but obviously they represent us at clubs and events across the country.

“We are really chuffed for them and pleased to add their trophies to our display.”
