SWINDON’S only support group aimed at people grappling with the loss of a loved one to suicide has marked a year since reaching out to grieving families in the town.

Members of self-help charity Survivors Of Bereavement By Suicide were joined by South Swindon MP Robert Buckland in celebrating the milestone at Asda, West Swindon.

Last September, faced with the lack of support for those left to cope after the sudden loss of someone close to them, Jacky Parry decided to form a branch of the national charity in Wiltshire.

Ever since the group has offered survivors a safe and confidential environment in which to share their struggles, giving and gaining support from each other.

“Since we started we have had over 50 referrals,” said Jacky.

“We support survivors and we also work with the mental health services and bring awareness of what we do.

“It’s been sad for survivors but good knowing that we are doing something positive in the community.”

A survivor who has been with the group since it first started said: “When a bereavement happens through suicide you feel so cut off.

“The empathy from people in the group means so much. They understand.”

Speaking to the group and its volunteers was an eye-opening experience according to Robert Buckland.

“I think it’s really important that we look at things through the eyes of survivors and that’s why groups like these are very important.” he said.

“They are important to inform the process and come to policy makers and say ‘these are the problems we have identified and what can we do to help survivors?’ “We need to listen to that expertise.”

The charity was awarded £200 by Asda; a donation which coincided with its anniversary celebration.
