OVERNIGHT flooding which saw a train evacuated has left commuters facing long delays this morning between Bath Spa and Swindon.

Train operator First Great Western said services between Bristol Temple Meads and Swindon would be unable to call at Chippenham due to a diversion to avoid flooding on the line, which would also add 45 mintues on to journey times.

A statement from FGW said: "Due to flooding between Bath Spa and Swindon, services to and from Bristol Temple Meads are unable to call at Chippenham and will be diverted via an alternative route, adding around 45 minutes to journey times from Bristol Temple Meads and Bath Spa.

"A shuttle train service is now in place between Chippenham and Swindon and road replacement transport is now arriving at the affected stations."

The delays come after around 90 passengers are believed to have been evacuated from a London-bound train at Pound Pill, Corsham, after it got stuck in floods.

The train was passing under a bridge when it ran into floodwater.

It is believed part of the train will be stuck at the scene for several days because some of the ballast holding the track in place has been washed away.

A First Great Western spokesman speaking just after 10am said: “We’ve still got serious disruption due to the flood water. Signalling will be in place as soon as possible as it is a key part of the track, but this will not be in the next hour.”
