TEAMS are being sought to compete in a football tournament raising money for Swindon Carers Centre and Alzhemier’s Support UK.

The eight-a-side event is taking place at the County Ground extension between 5.30pm and 9.30pm on Friday.

It is being organised by Swindon Cares, which consists of companies and organisations fundraising for charitable groups.

Swindon Cares supports two charities for a period of two years and in its 11-year existence the group has raised £200,000 for good causes through a series of events.

Bill Fishlock, Swindon Cares vice chairman, said: “We do a number of events each year and the football competition is always a big one for us.

“It is a really good venue and we always have a lot of fun.

“We want to welcome our teams and raise lots of money for chairty.

“Last year, we managed to raise £15,000 which was shared between the two groups.

“We are currently on around £13,000 this year and it would be great to get to that £15,000 mark once again but we understand times are hard.

“We are a group of companies and organisations supporting groups which benefit Swindon.”

The tournament organisers hope to have 16 teams enjoying a kickaround for charity, with entry costing £60 per team.

Swindon Cares plans to present cheques to Swindon Carers Centre and Alzhemier’s Support UK in November, before they then find two new organisations to support for the next two years.

The money that the carers centre, based in Wood Street, has received has allowed them to set up social groups for carers and those with dementia.

Cath Johnston, chief executive officer, said: “It has been a wonderful two years and Swindon Cares has supported us greatly.

“The money has specifically been focused at older carers and those with dementia.

“It has allowed us to set up the regular social for both carers and those with dementia to attend.

“It gives the carers a break and there are also staff there to help with the needs of those with dementia.”
