A CLOTHES charity which alters garments for disabled people raised £200 at a fundraising event.

Dressability, formed in 1998, held a clothes sale at their York House offices, in Hindle Way, last Thursday. The charity provides clothes adaptations for the disabled and the over 65s.

Sharon Tombs, manager of the Dorcan-based organisation, said: “The sale went very well and we are pleased by the support we received. The sale includes pre-loved clothes donated to us by our clients and supporters to help with our work.

“We had some fantastic clothes on sale including designer handbags, evening gowns and shoes.”

Dressability helps people from across Swindon and has a team of 16 which includes part-time staff, volunteers and trustees.

Sharon said: “We are only one of two charities like this in the UK. Our service enables people to wear the clothes they want to rather than having to buy specialist clothing.

“It isn’t even that the specialist clothes are all that expensive but the work we do allows people to remain individual. For example, we make alterations to football shirts to allow children to show their support to their favourite team and we adapt trousers for those who have suffered from strokes which allows them to keep wearing smart trousers if they don’t want to wear jog pants.”

Dressability still has some remaining items which were donated for last’s week fundraiser and they plan to hold a follow up clothes sale in the coming weeks.

They will also be holding their annual general meeting at Sainbury’s, in Bridgemead, at 11am on Friday, October 17. Speakers will include Paralympic athlete Louise Hunt and BBC producer Andy Stevenson.

Sharon said: “We are always keen to welcome more people find out about what we do and the meeting would be an ideal opportunity.”

The supermarket will also be hosting a Dressability fashion show on Saturday, November 15 with models wearing Sainsbury’s clothing which has been adapted by the charity. Shows take place at 11am, 1pm and 3pm.
