THE Central Library held a special drop-in event to mark World Mental Health Day yesterday offering visitors information and advice.

Each year the day aims to raise awareness of mental health issues, while providing education and support, as well as furthering the campaign to end the stigma around mental health.

The drop-in event took place from 10.30am and 2.30pm and saw a number of organisations on hand to speak to people looking to find out more about mental health, including Swindon MIND, LIFT psychology service, Headway, the Alzheimer’s Society, the Harbour Project and SOBs – Survivors Of Bereavement By Suicide, as well as members of Swindon Council’s health ambassador team.

Coun Brian Mattock, the cabinet member for health and adult social care, said: “Mental health problems touch the lives of so many people – in fact one in four of us will experience a mental health problem at some point in our lives.

“That’s why promoting mental wellbeing and supporting those experiencing mental illness is a council priority.

“And, working with partner organisations in Swindon, we’re committed to providing services which best meet local needs.

“These events are great opportunities to find out more about the support on offer and also to learn something new about an issue people may still feel uncomfortable talking about.

“Breaking down the stigma often associated with mental health problems is really important.”
