STUDENTS from Swindon College donned their gowns and mortar boards yesterday as the annual graduation ceremony took place.

The students gathered at Jury’s Inn before making their way up Princes Street for the traditional service at Holy Rood Church.

The ceremony is a key event in the college’s calendar and this year was no exception, with many celebrating getting grades higher than they expected.

Among them was Megan Harper, 21, who received a 2:1 in graphic design, a grade higher than she was expecting when she started out.

She said: “I was really pleased when I found out as I worked very hard.

“For me now it is about building up work experience. The college have been absolutely brilliant and very supportive.

“Today is the first time we have seen each other since May so it is good to catch up with everyone again.”

One student graduating yesterday who is seeking to break the mould is Bryany Harris, 23, who picked up her HNC in construction.

She was one of only two females on the course.

She said: “When I was about 18 I just fancied a change and decided to do something different.

“The guys on the course were fine though and we all got along really well.

“ I work as a quantity surveyor so I am used to working in a predominately male environment.

“Swindon College have been really supportive all the way through and the tutors have made sure we always had everything we needed.

“I was there for three years and in that time I have learnt so much which is really useful.”

The graduation day is just as much for the families as it is for the students, with some coming from great distances.

Leah Toomey’s family travelled down from Kent to share in her big day.

The 20-year-old said: “It’s really nice to have them here as I’m a bit nervous.

“I got an HND in media make-up and now work freelance.

“I have done a couple of weddings and am now really looking to build up some experience.

The course has been really helpful and I enjoyed my time at the college.”
