THE final drive to change Police And Criminal Evidence Act (PACE) guidelines has begun for the mother of murdered Becky Godden-Edwards.

Thousands of people have already put their names to a petition to help drive change to the Act after a conviction could not be brought against Becky’s killer, and mum Karen Edwards is hoping to have a positive result in Parliament by Christmas.

Becky was last seen on December 27 2002, and her body was not discovered until 2011, when police uncovered her remains in a field in Eastleach, Gloucestershire.

A conviction has never been brought against Becky’s killer because investigating officer DSI Steve Fulcher was found to have breached PACE guidelines while interviewing taxi-driver Chris Halliwell, currently serving a life sentence for the murder of Swindon girl Sian O’Callaghan. More than 70,000 petition packs have been distributed and Karen will be setting up shop today and through November at the West Swindon District Centre to collect the forms.

“I still do not know how many we have got because we are still making a record of them all,” said Karen. “In the beginning people were just picking up the petition packs and saying they would get some signatures. They could still be on someone’s coffee table or under a pile of letters, so we need everyone who has taken a pack away to get it back in to us.

“We are going to be visiting Asda in the West Swindon District Centre from 10am until 6pm on a series of dates, because we are going to be meeting with [Swindon South MP] Robert Buckland at the end of November.

“On November 7 and 28 we will be back at Asda collecting signatures and petitions, and later on the day of November 28 we are seeing Robert Buckland.”

Karen has promised to thank every person who has helped her in her fight personally.

“People have signed the petition but now things have gone very quiet all of a sudden, and I have been putting together some thank you cards with Becky’s photo on them to give out to everyone who has helped me along the way,” she said.

“There are some people who have gone over and above. The people at the Rotary Club have been fantastic, as well as Gail Light, who has helped set up all the meetings and talks for me.

“The support has been unbelievable. I have had people standing with me in the freezing cold with the rain chucking down at football matches collecting signatures, and we have been out when Bristol were playing and a riot going on but people were still fighting for signatures.

“It is not going to bring Becky back or help that situation but hopefully help another family not have to go through the anguish I have had to go through.”

Petition packs can be returned at the West Swindon Asda today from 10am to 6pm or by post to JusticeFor Becky Appeal, 100 Victoria Road, Swindon, SN1 3BE. Or email justiceforbecky@ yahoo.com, call Karen on 07747 023518 or Sandy on 07934 718192.
