PROFESSIONAL boxing star Kelvin Young and his manager Keith Mayo paid a visit to The Open Door Centre recently, a cause close to their hearts and one that they have been supporting for a number of years.

Both Kelvin and Keith are patrons of the cause and have been doing all they can to raise much-needed funds, even more so since the council cut the group’s funding over a year ago.

The Open Door Centre, based at St Bartholomew’s Chapel, Gorse Hill, provides a specialist day resource for adults with learning disabilities, who may also have physical disabilities and/or mental health issues.

The AGM conducted its usual business as well as presenting awards to those adults who deservedly earned them over the past year as well as fundraisers who make such a difference and keep the place open.

Keith said: “Since the council stopped funding the cause it has been a very difficult time for them. Kelvin and I have done what we can to help and earlier this year Kelvin and a few of his friends did a skydive and raised over £800.

“I have my thinking cap on at the moment about what we can do next and I am thinking something boxing/training orientated in the gym. Any suggestions, let us know.”

Kelvin added: “This place is really close to my heart.

“I have visited many times and spent a lot of time here with the guys. It’s been great to help Pat out who runs the place, raising much needed funds and part of my future plans definitely involve raising more and doing what I can.”
