A modern method is being used to showcase the past during an exhibition which runs until tomorrow.

People are invited to discover and explore how Swindon town centre has changed from decade to decade and century to century at a special pop-up exhibition organised by the Swindon Museum and Art Gallery.

Swindon Town Centre: Past, Present and Future – featuring town historians, heritage groups and artists – runs from 9am to 5pm today and tomorrow at units 40 and 41, on the first floor of the Brunel Shopping Centre Arcade.

The exhibition is being run in partnership with Swindon Heritage magazine, Swindon Society, Forward Swindon, Broadgreen & Queenstown History Group, Museum of Computing, Swindon Libraries and Wilts and Berks Canal Trust.

It tells the story of how the centre of Swindon has changed, from the days of the canals and trams, to a bustling Victorian centre of commerce and through to the modern-day development of offices, cafes and shopping centres.

“Visitors can come along to explore displays showing the rapid development and changes to Swindon’s shopping streets, such as Regent Street,” said a spokes-man.

Artists from the town’s artsite group are also running a children’s drawing activity each day as part of national Family Arts Festival and The Big Draw, with youngsters being encouraged to draw a town.

A potential future development is also being discussed, with visitors to the display being urged to have their say on plans for a new Swindon Museum and Art Gallery in the town centre.

Staff from Barker Langham, who are conducting a survey on people’s views of the plans, are on hand to hear from people who have a view on the proposed move.
