MOTORISTS are expected to encounter increasing congestion on the town’s roads with yet more roadworks set to begin today.

The bridge in Swindon Road, Stratton Green, will be closed for 20 weeks as Network Rail carry out work to electrify the Great Western line.

During the time, pedestrians and cyclists will be able to still use the bridge but motorists will be diverted.

The alternative route will see them sent to Transfer Bridges.

The work is expected to have an effect on passing trade going to The Dockle Farmhouse pub, in Bridge End Road.

Paul Pearson, the pub manager, said: “We do feel the diversion will is in place for rather a long time especially given that the traffic is already quite bad around here.

“We’re just going to have to wait and see what happens when the work starts.”

Electronic signboards went up around the area to warn commuters of the work, last month.

And Network Rail claim that they are doing all they can to make motorists aware of the work.

A Network Rail spokesman said: “As soon as we became aware of the need for a closure, we worked closely with the council and other local organisations to ensure that everyone who could potentially be affected was informed.

“This has included working with the Chamber of Commerce to distribute information to their members, radio interviews, press notices, speaking with local schools, briefings with parish and ward councillors, and a drop-in event for the public.

“While we understand the concerns of the local community, the closure of this bridge is necessary in order to prepare it for electrification and the benefits this will bring.

“These benefits include reduced journey times and train services that are more comfortable, smoother and quieter for passengers and people living near the railway.”
