YOUNGSTERS from King William Street School had lunch with a difference on Tuesday as they were shown the secrets to making the perfect curry.

A group of Year 3 pupils headed to the Jewel in the Crown Indian Restaurant on Victoria Road where they helped with food preparation and learned about the different spices used when making the cuisine.

Once the food had been made they all sat down together and tucked into the tasty meal they had created.

“All of the children seemed to really enjoy it,” said class teacher Georgina Day.

“At the school we have question topics and at the moment it is ‘Are we one world?’ and we have been learning about national dress, dance and food so this fits in perfectly.

“The children gained a lot from being able to go into the restaurant and find out about the foods and the way they are made, something which was new for many of them.”

The pupils were at the school for several hours during which they were able to work on a number of activities, including helping out the chefs in the kitchen, before sitting down together to try it.

“The children split into two groups. One of them stayed in the restaurant area and were able to smell the different spices,” said Georgina.

“The other half learnt how to make naan bread and put chicken on skewers before watching it cook. They had to be a bit patient at times but everyone enjoyed themselves.

“Many of the children had never been in a restaurant kitchen before so it was a nice experience for them and with a lot of the people who work there being from a different culture they were able to learn a great deal.

“After that we sat down and all had a chicken Korma which was really nice.

“It is something I would recommend to any other school.”
