DRIVERS are being warned to expect extra congestion at Bruce Street Bridges during off-peak hours to allow for essential works to take place.

Contractors working on the junction reduced the eastbound side of the carriageway to one lane from 9.30am to allow for the extension of a drainage trench. The road will be reduced to one lane until 3.30pm. The road will then reopen to two lanes for the peak evening period. The carriageway restrictions will occur intermittently for the next six months during off peak hours.

Motorists should allow extra time for their journeys during this time or seek an alternative route.

Work to improve the Bruce Street Bridges junction on Great Western Way started in September and will see the creation of a single roundabout controlled with part-time traffic signals during peak periods.

This work to improve Bruce Street Bridges is designed to ease congestion on one of the most heavily used roads in Swindon and is part of a programme that will see two further junctions similarly improved over the coming years.

The work has been co-ordinated to take place alongside essential flood alleviation work and to coincide with the funding timeframe from the Department for Transport and Environment Agency.
