A 78-year-old man from Royal Wootton Bassett has died in hospital after being hit by a car on Wednesday evening.

Police are now investigating the incident and are appealing for any witnesses to the crash, which occurred on Station Road, outside the Old Nick pub, shortly before 5.30pm.

At that time the man had been walking along Station Road when he was struck by a grey Fiat Punto, and suffered serious head, pelvis and internal injuries.

The driver of the Fiat was unharmed and is not currently subject to any police action while inquiries continue.

Witnesses called the ambulance service who attended within minutes and treated the man at the scene.

A spokesman for Wiltshire Police said: “We were called at 5.25pm to Station Road in Royal Wootton Bassett to a collision between a car, a grey Fiat Punto, and a pedestrian, a 78-year-old male from Royal Wootton Bassett.

“The male had suffered life-threatening head injuries along with pelvic and internal injuries.

“The incident took place outside The Old Nick pub on Station Road.

“The man was taken to Great Western Hospital in Swindon with life threatening injuries but sadly died on Thursday morning as a result of his injuries.

“Wiltshire Police would like to hear from anyone who was on Station Road immediately before the incident or anyone who may have witnessed the collision.”

A spokesman for the South Western Ambulance Service said the man was transported to Great Western Hospital within an hour after being treated at the scene.

“We were called at 5.23pm to Station Road in Royal Wootton Bassett to reports of a man being hit by a car,” he said.

“Witnesses reported a man in his 70s who had been struck by a car.

“Upon attending he was found to have serious head injuries and was taken to Great Western Hospital by 6.27pm.”
