EXPECT to see more of Swindon singer Jahmene Douglas in the coming months as he sets his sights on a return to the town – and the charts.

The 23-year-old has announced he will be back in Swindon and singing at his old workplace in Orbital Shopping Centre’s Asda superstore next month.

Jahmene has re-formed his relationship with the retail giant by providing the music for its Christmas TV advert this year – and will perform in the first week of December for shoppers and staff.

The return to mainstream television has boosted the soul star’s keenness to release some new music before Christmas, having been away from the charts since his Love Never Fails album in July 2013.

“I want something out before Christmas, an EP or something, because it has been so long,” he told the Adver. “People are like ‘where are you, back in Asda?’”

The much talked-about second album had been pencilled in for a summer release this year, but delays and wrangling over how it should sound have pushed it back again and again.

But Jahmene is confident it will be ready for release in April next year. In his return to the small screen, the X-Factor runner-up covers Louis Armstrong’s When You’re Smiling.

Recording was a rapid and intensive process, but a welcome surprise given how long it has been since he released any material. “It was nice. They wanted so many different versions on the TV. It’s crazy how fast it all happens,” he said.

“It was nice to be approached because I haven’t done anything recently. It’s nice that Asda is still supporting me.

“It was very humbling and reminds me of where I have come from. I am so thankful to them and it’s good to see people are there for you, two-and-a-half years since I worked with them.

“It was nice to be part of it too. Asda is very much a family of people. People are always telling me how strange it was that they used to work with me and then I was on TV.”

The former New College student has been on a whirlwind ride since he shot to fame on ITV’s primetime talent contest, and ended up spending last Christmas on his own in Los Angeles.

It’s a mistake he said he won’t make again, with plans to either spend it with family in Swindon or invite them all out to his London home for the big day. He said When You’re Smiling has always reminded him of Christmas.

“It’s uplifting. It’s always on at Christmas. It was nice to do my own take on Louis Armstrong.”
