A DOG had a lucky escape yesterday afternoon after firefighters were called to a burning house in North Swindon.

The black female Dachshund was taken to a neighbour’s home and, although terrified, suffered no injuries. There was no one in the house at the time.

Wiltshire Fire and Rescue were called to the three-storey property in Dunvant Road shortly after 1pm after a neighbour raised the alarm.

The fire was in a first-floor bedroom and, while there was smoke damage elsewhere in the property, the fire was contained to one room as the fire door was shut.

Four fire engines were called to the scene as well as the aerial appliance. Breathing apparatus firefighters were used to tackle the blaze and then the building was fully checked over for hot spots.

Station manager Gareth Evans said: “This is the perfect example of why buildings have fire doors. The fact the doors were shut meant the fire was contained to the one room.

“Having fully working fire detectors helped because the neighbours were able to hear it and raise the alarm.”

The cause of the fire is not known and investigations are continuing.
