A PASSER-BY who attempted to save the life of fatally wounded Aulton ‘Tom’ Rogers and an officer who disarmed a violent man in a tense stand-off have been recognised for their bravery by Wiltshire Police.

At a ceremony in Bradford-on-Avon, the selfless actions of Swindon resident Alex Pollock and PC Christopher Miller and were celebrated along with eight other officers and special constables from Swindon.

In total 17 police officers and staff from across the country were presented with awards by Chief Constable Pat Geenty, including the rare award to a member of the public.

On Thursday, June 26, Alex Pollock was walking along the cycle path runing between the Oasis Leisure Centre and the town centre when he discovered a bicycle lying in the middle of the pavement.

Taking it upon himself to search for its owner, Alex came across pub worker Tom Rogers, who had been stabbed multiple times in a savage attack.

Tom was unresponsive, and Alex immediately called 999 and began administering CPR, but the 60-year-old died of his injuries.

Alex has now been awarded the Chief Constable’s Certificate of Appreciation.

Chief Constable’s Commend-ations were also awarded to PCs Chris Miller and Steve Burson.

PC Miller had been called to reports of an assault at a house in Swindon, where he was faced with a man wielding a knife and forcibly restraining his victim.

Along with a colleague, PC MIller diffused the situation and was able to disarm the attacker.

PC Burson was granted his award after a 31 years with the police in Wiltshire and Dyfed Powys, consistently putting himself on the line as a response officer.

Chief Constable Pat Geenty said: “The force awards ceremony was a very special occasion and recognised the bravery and selfless acts of Wiltshire Police staff and officers.

“Our awards ceremonies are inclusive, ensuring both officers and the public are recognised for their bravery and commitment.

“People are at the heart of Wiltshire Police and it is wonderful to know our police officers and staff are supported by the local communities of Wiltshire."

Five Chief Constable’s Certificates Of Merit and a Chief Constable’s Certificate Of Appreciation were awarded for the introduction of the police cadet scheme which was launched in North Swindon schools this year.

The recipients were PC Sandra Higgins-Hughes, PCSO Mandi Coles, Special Sergeant Robert Bewey, Special Constable Lee Hitt and volunteer Jill Quadri, all of Swindon and Insp Pete Chamberlain, of Trowbridge.

Angus Macpherson, the Police And Crime Commissioner For Wiltshire and Swindon, said: “The force awards ceremonies always fill me with pride as I hear about the great work done by officers, staff and volunteers on behalf of the people of Wiltshire and Swindon.

“I was a great pleasure to see awards presented to Special Constables, and I would like to pass my thanks to the team who have set up the Volunteer Police Cadets, for their sterling work, much of which was in their own time.

“The cadet scheme is another excellent example of encouraging young people to make positive choices and grow into good citizens.”
