“COME on Jamie, give us your old piano.” These are the lyrics sung by pupils and staff from The Commonweal School in a bid to win one of musician Jamie Cullum’s pianos.

The school’s song Come on Jamie has been whittled down to a shortlist of six from hundreds of entries in the running for the prize.

A poll is currently taking place on the performer’s website to find the winner, with the people of Swindon being urged to get behind Commonweal’s entry.

Ali Sutcliffe, the school’s head of music, said: “To win Jamie’s piano would be fantastic, not just for our students but for use by the whole community of Swindon.

"We are an inclusive school with children from all sorts of backgrounds and abilities and we actively encourage them to express themselves through the arts. To have a piano of this calibre would be a terrific boost to their confidence.”

Eighty of the school’s children and staff took part in the song, which was written by arts technician Nick Weaver.

Commonweal’s pupils are excited about the prospect of winning the Yahama piano, which will be signed by Jamie.

Year 10 pupil Valentina Opare-Darko, 14, a pianist, said: “It would be absolutely amazing to be able to play Jamie Cullum’s piano and I hope everyone votes for us.”

Fellow Year 10 pupil Bradley Cull, 14, who sang on the entry, said: “Recording the song was great and lots of fun too. It would be great for the school to win the piano.”

The deadline for votes is Sunday, December 14, with the winner being announced the following day.

Pete Williams, the school’s ICT manager, who filmed the entry, said: “Vote from work, vote from home, get your friends and family to vote and please share the link on your Facebook and social media sites.

"We’re up against some other very worthwhile causes, so every vote counts.”
