Academy designs take shape

Headlands as it is now Headlands as it is now

THIS is the first chance to see what Swindon's academy will look like.

The controversial academy, which will go on the current site of the Pinehurst People's Centre in Swindon, was given the go-ahead last week.

Now the first draft of the school design has been made public and people will soon have the chance to comment on it.

The plans will go on display at Pinehurst Junior School in Beech Avenue on February 13 and 14 from 3.30pm to 7.30pm.

The council says all views given about the design will be considered before any planning application is made.

It is due to go before the council's planning committee at the end of February.

Coun Garry Perkins, cabinet member for children's services, said: "The academy will provide a 21st Century learning environment that engages and inspires young people.

"The proposed design is a cutting-edge building providing state-of-the-art facilities, including a theatre, media suites, science laboratories, workshops and games areas. We have listened to residents' concerns about access and noise and have taken this into account. We welcome any further thoughts on the plans so please attend this event and tell us what you think."

The academy will cater for pupils aged from four to 19, while a new Sure Start facility will be available on site for younger children.

Different age groups will have their own entrances, recreation areas and separate break times.

Martyn Baker, ULT's national education adviser and project manager for Swindon, said: "This is an amazing opportunity to build a brand new purpose-built school for our children.

"The designs produced for the academy are practical, exciting and innovative; the proposed academy will be a great place to teach and learn.

"A lot of work is under way and there is a great deal still to do.

"I really hope that local people will come along and see the designs for the academy.

"It is important that residents, parents and the wider community have their say.

"This academy could benefit generations of young people in the area."

The main entrance to the academy will be in Beech Avenue. Services at the centre will be moved from September this year.

0Separate discussions are taking place with these groups about this.

The academy is expected to be open in the new building in September 2009.
