A CAMPAIGNER who has helped to raise thousands for guide dogs in Swindon is heading to London today, after being nominated for a national award.

Alan Fletcher is one of four people who have been nominated for the Inspirational Guide Dog Owner of the Year award at the Guide Dogs Annual Awards.

Alan and his wife Shirley will head to the capital to the ceremony which is being held at the Park Lane Hotel.

The nominees for the award were announced in August and Alan was put forward for the award by a number of people.

The award was then opened to a public vote, with the results being announced later today.

Alan says that while he is pleased to be put forward, the nomination is recognition of all the Swindon Guide Dog Group.

He said: “It is always nice to be recognised for the work you are doing.

“We were meant to be going on holiday but we have put it back three days because it’s not every day you are put forward for a national award.

“It is pleasing but everyone has worked so hard in Swindon that this is recognition of all their efforts. I’m looking forward to the awards and crossing my fingers.”

Alan has been nominated predominantly for his work in setting up the 4Joy appeal, which has so far raised more than £45,000 to go towards the training of guide dogs.

It was set up following the death of Alan’s previous guide dog Joy, who died last year. Initially a target of £20,000 was set but this was very quickly achieved and already six puppies are being trained.

Alan said: “I have been overwhelmed by the support I have had from people because I didn’t realise how many people had been touched by Joy. As well as raising money it has been about making people aware of guide dogs in Swindon – which I think we have achieved.

“I just hope someone else is able to get the benefit from a guide dog that I have had.”

The Guide Dog Charity has worked with Alan for the 4Joy appeal and was among those who put him forward for the award.

Victoria Noyce-Guthrie, a community fundraiser for the charity, said: “For Alan to be selected as a finalist acknowledges not only his amazing work for Guide Dogs but also the excellent support and commitment given by the other members of the Swindon Guide Dog Group.

“We are so proud of them all.”
