CHILDREN at Wroughton Preschool are ‘happy, active and enthusiastic to learn’, say Osted inspectors who visited the facility last month.

The nursery for three and four-year-olds, which operates out of the church hall in Priors Hill every weekday, was graded good by the education watchdog in the report published last week.

Inspectors praised the pre-school across all three areas, including meeting all the children’s needs, contributing effectively to the well-being of children and the effective management and leadership of the site.

In the report, inspectors said: “Children’s progress in their learning is good because staff have a secure understanding of how to engage children’s interest and support their development.

“Children are well prepared for the next stage in their learning and eventual progression on to full-time school.

“Children have many opportunities to develop their communication and language skills. Children have ready access to a wide selection of good quality books and enjoy listening to stories with staff.

“The key-person system is firmly embedded and staff provide a caring and loving environment in which children feel comfortable, safe and secure. This has helped to enable them to separate happily from their parents and to approach new situations with confidence, such as when they are ready to go to school.”

However, the inspectors said they had told staff that before the pre-school could be graded outstanding it needed to improve monitoring policies and provide consistent opportunities for children to write their own names to encourage their literacy development.

The findings in the report were welcomed by Becky Butterworth, deputy supervisor at Wroughton Preschool, who said staff were pleased with the results.

She said: “We were absolutely astounded with the report; we were amazed and very, very pleased. It’s a really good report and there were only a couple of things that inspectors said we needed to improve.

“We always look for the positives here and if there are ever any issues we try and deal with them as quickly as we can and come up with workable solutions.

“I think it’s that we just work really closely with the parents and the children to do our best for them.

“We’re always striving to improve and we will be taking on the recommendations in the report to make the improvements.”
