WILTSHIRE Fire and Rescue is reminding households to test smoke alarms as part of their New Year’s resolutions.
The service is also urging people in the county to get into the habit of testing their alarms on a regular basis.
Home safety manager Neil Chamberlain said: “Working smoke alarms can make a real difference and they have the potential to save lives.
“Smoke alarms are inexpensive and can be bought in DIY stores and at supermarkets. They should be fitted on every level of your home, in accordance with the manufacturer’s instructions, and, most importantly, they should be tested regularly.
“You're more than four times as likely to survive a fire if you have a working smoke alarm. They can give you and your family the necessary warning to get out in the early stages of a fire, which should, in turn, allow us to get to you more quickly.”
Some households qualify for a free fire safety check. Call 0800 389 7849 or see www.wiltsfire.gov.uk
