TWO drivers were taken to hospital on Wednesday night following another crash on Thamesdown Drive.

Although initial reports said three vehicles were involved, police confirmed the accident involved two cars and both drivers were taken to the Great Western Hospital.

The incident happened at 6.45pm at the Torun Way and Redhouse Way Junction, closing part of Thamesdown Drive for more than an hour.

The collision involved a blue Mercedes and silver Peugeot, with both vehicles receiving heavy damage.

One of the drivers was treated for leg injuries while another driver suffered chest injuries. Neither of these were deemed serious.

A passenger in one of the cars was also treated for wounds caused by the seatbelt.

Thamesdown Drive has been the scene of a number of accidents in recent months, prompting concern from local residents who have asked for action to be taken.

Statistics have shown the road has on average no more accidents than others but police have admitted in the past that the perception of danger means they have looked at how best to take action.

Coun Oliver Donachie (Con, Haydon Wick), who is on the Wiltshire and Swindon Police and Crime Panel, believes that if the road does become a danger then action must be taken, but in many cases it is down to driver error.

He said: “The figures show that this is not an especially dangerous road when compared with many others.

“But as councillors I know it is our role to act on the concerns of our residents.

“At the next crime panel I will once again be raising this issue. If the road did ever cross the threshold then I would be jumping up and down to make sure something was done.

“We don’t know the cause of this crash yet as it is still being investigated so I can’t comment on it specifically.

“What I will say is many of the accidents are caused by bad driving, whether it is drinking, speeding or jumping red lights.

“I think in a lot of cases we should perhaps look more at blaming the driver as opposed to the road.”
