MOTORISTS are confused by plans to close a section of Marlborough Road.

Electronic signs have been put up around the road stating that a section near Great Western Hospital will be closed overnight for four weeks from Monday, January 26.

However, Swindon Council insists no road closure has been agreed at this stage.

A council spokesman said: “The road will need to be closed overnight in the near future for work associated with the new development at Commonhead, but we haven’t agreed the dates and times yet with the developer’s contractor. They have put the electronic signs up themselves, which we will be asking them to remove until they can include information about when the work will actually take place.”

This confusion has left motorists disgruntled.

James Harris, 43, a taxi driver, said: “It is good to know that the work isn’t taking place just yet but it is very annoying when you see these signs and have to plan ahead. It is particularly frustrating in our profession as we need to know what routes we can and can’t take.

“Obviously road closures are annoying for motorists, but we understand they have to take place, at times. In the future, we’d ask that the signs advertising them only go up when the dates are set.”

When the work does start it will still allow for ambulances and motorists to get access to GWH.

The complete Commonhead development will have 900 homes.

The council regularly post details on a section of their website highlighting roadworks and road closures. It is expected that details of the Marlborough Road work will be posted there when dates and times have been agreed.
