TEENAGERS looking for the next step in their singing careers can audition to join a new glee club with the Everybody Sing school.

Children aged 12 to 17 looking to develop their musical talent can head along to the auditions at Old Town’s Belmont Studios on Sunday from 1pm.

The new club, which has been inspired by the popularity of the hit American sitcom of the same name which is based on the prominence of glee clubs in American High Schools, will actively compete with other clubs in the UK and benefit from the support of the singing school’s patron, Maureen Nolan.

Sophie Haynes, the principal of the singing school in Belmont Crescent which opened last year, said: “We are starting up a new glee club for ages 12 to 17 which will cover popular and modern music. We will be covering modern and popular songs from artists such as Jessie J to Passenger, to Ellie Goulding to Bruno Mars.

“We will strip the music back into unique arrangements with harmonies and we will be using a live pianist. It will be very similar to Radio 1 Live Lounge and we have had a lot of interest both from teenagers and adults.

“There’s a gap in Swindon for a different style of club for this age group and we hope this will be something that will capture that interest. It’s not just a choir or choral music, it’s fun and contemporary.

“The club will be a competition team, and the group will eventually have to opportunity to compete throughout the UK and also later on this year perform for our patron, Maureen Nolan as well as our other annual shows and performances.”

Following the auditions, the club will meet every Monday evening from 7.30pm to 8.30pm for the club, which will cost £4 a week.

The singing school has flourished since it was first opened last year, and is now teaching around 100 students aged form four upwards.

As well as the glee club, Sophie is also looking forward to running the first workshop of 2015 during the February half term.

She said: “It will be a Frozen workshop, based on the hugely popular Disney film.

“Children who come along can have a go at singing, dancing, arts and crafts and lots of other games and activities too.”

The workshop will take place on February 19 from 9.30am to 2.30pm and costs £15 per child.
