A MALE pedestrian in his 50s suffered life-threatening injuries in an accident with a car this morning, which closed a major thoroughfare for several hours.

The incident occurred at about 7.40am near the entrance to the Marlborough Park estate on Pipers Way, the B4006.

The man involved was treated at the Great Western Hospital but has now been transferred to Southmead Hospital, Bristol.

Police say the female driver of a red Vauxhall Corsa was unharmed but shaken.

A glove, backpack and debris were in the road as investigations began.

The southbound carriageway was closed until midday with congestion being reported to the Coate roundabout.

A police spokesman said: "Officers would like to hear from anyone who witnessed the collision or was on Pipers Way at the time of the incident.

"Anyone with information is asked to contact PC Alan King via 101 or Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111, where information may be left anonymously."
