YOUNG actors are being urged to put themselves forward for parts in the latest production from a youth project from the Wyvern Theatre.

The Broadway hit Hairspray will be performed at the theatre for its 21st Summer Youth Project.

And this year, organisers said they are particularly keen to hear from talented young black performers, with auditions being held on Sunday, April 19.

The show will run at the Wyvern from Thursday, August 20, to Sunday, August 23.

“Summer Youth Project is a really fun experience and Hairspray will be one of our most popular productions,” said Derek Aldridge, theatre director.

“New participants are always welcome, so if you love singing, dancing and acting, then we would love to hear from you – whatever your background.”

Set in the early 1960s, Hairspray follows the life of Tracy Turnblad, a teenager who dreams of dancing on TV’s The Corny Collins Show. When Tracy wins the chance to dance live on the shows, she becomes an instant celebrity.

She then leads a fight to have black and white dancers integrated on the same show, something never before done, and all without denting her ‘do.

All participants for the Summer Youth Project must be aged between nine and 21 in August.

Rehearsals begin on August 9 and the project lasts for two weeks.

Application forms are available at www.swindontheatres.co.uk or from the Wyvern’s box office.
