A 90-YEAR-OLD woman from Highworth had personal items and jewellery stolen from her home during a break-in on Monday.

At around 3pm, reports came through to police after the elderly woman returned home to find her purse and jewellery stolen after burglars entered her home.

Understandly shaken, the woman is being supported by police officers and investigations are currently under way with the burglary team.

At the early stages of the investigation, there are no firm suspects.

PC Sandra Higgins-Hughes, beat manager for Highworth, said: “As it stands we do not have any known suspects and investigations are ongoing now. This occurred overnight on January 20 and was reported to us at around 3pm that day. Personal items have been taken along with jewellery and cash.

“The investigation is now being handled by the burglary team.

“The lady affected is elderly and has been spoken to by officers, and we will be doing some follow-up visits to make sure she is okay.

“Being of her age she will need some reassurance from the police that we are looking into this and doing all we can, and that we are there for her.”

The news comes after a slight spike in dwelling burglaries as four people were arrested in the local area just last weekend on suspicion of burglary after two incidents in the area.

Overnight on January 16, police responded to reports of two dwelling burglaries, in Rivers Way in Highworth and Rawlings Close in South Marston.

Three men and one woman, aged between 19 and 25, were arrested shortly after the incidents. All four have now been bailed as the burglary team investigate the incidents.

PC Higgins-Hughes said: “Overnight on January 16, we received reports of two burglaries, one in Rivers Way, Highworth and the other being Rawlings Close, South Marston.

“Three males and one female, aged between 19 and 25, have been arrested.

“The force’s burglary team are carrying out the investigation. The four are currently on bail whilst the investigation continues.

“We would urge everyone to make sure everything at your property is secure, no cash can be seen from the windows and any valuables locked away and hidden out of sight."

Anyone with any information about the incident or saw anyone acting suspiciously in the area during Monday, January 19, should contact Wiltshire Police on the non-emergency number 101.
