MEMBERS of the Swindon Town’s first team yesterday added their voices to a chorus of tributes paid to a young goalkeeper who died suddenly this week.

Rhiannon Brown, 15, who played for Swindon Town U16 Ladies team, died at the John Radcliffe Hospital in Oxford on Wednesday.

The exact cause of her death is not known but friends say she had been complaining of a headache earlier in the day and had gone home from school.

On Thursday evening, her teammates released Chinese lanterns in her memory and as news spread, Swindon first-team players paid their respects via Twitter. Captain Nathan Thompson said: “My thoughts and condolences are with Rhiannon Brown and her loved ones at this difficult time – a sad day for all at STFITC and STFC.”.

His brother, Louis, said: “My thoughts and prayers go out to Rhiannon Brown and her family! Such sad news! Xx.”

Back-up goalkeeper Tyrell Belford wrote: “So saddened to hear the news of the u16 ladies gk Rhiannon Brown passing away brilliant goalkeeper and attitude thoughts with her family.”

Norwich loanee Harry Toffolo said: “RIP Rhiannon Brown! I've heard she was a very competent goalkeeper! Such awful news! Thoughts with her family and friends!”

As well as offering much of her time helping other young footballers develop, Rhiannon was a much-loved pupil at Dorcan Academy.

Yesterday, head of PE Wendy Craig said: “A larger than life character with a heart of gold who lived for her football, Rhiannon brought a smile to many faces with her sense of humour and her joy for life.

“Her love of football gave her a purpose and a drive to succeed. She loved her PE lessons and it was here that her personality shone through. Although she joined The Dorcan Academy late, she quickly established lasting friendships and close bonds with many.

“She represented the Dorcan Football team with pride, her dedication and commitment was second to none. Rhiannon was a team player, loyal and true.

“She was an inspiration to younger students and always had time for them.

“Rhiannon will be sorely missed but always remembered, not only for her sporting talents but the way she embraced life and all the opportunities that came her way. Rhiannon has created many memories with so many people.”
