A SERIOUS sexual assault, believed to have occurred in the underpass between Station Road and the Oasis leisure centre, did not occur thereon say Wiltshire Police.

Detectives have been investigating the crime since it was reported on Saturday, January 11, by the 18-year-old victim from Swindon.

Inspector Ron Peach, who is leading on the investigation, said: “We now have new information that confirms that the serious sexual assault did not occur in the underpass or in the immediate vicinity.

"We have also been able to confirm this through CCTV at the location.

"Due to the public concern around the safety of the area, we felt it was important for the public to know we no longer believe the offence happened at this location.

"We are working very closely with the victim and the investigation continues.

"I cannot express strongly enough how difficult such an investigation can be for a victim and it is our priority to work with them to establish the facts and investigate this incident thoroughly."

The victim is receiving the relevant support during the investigation process.

Inspector Paul Saunders, from the Town Centre Team, said: "I want to make sure that people are aware that the recent changes to the underpass, such as lighting and CCTV have proved very useful in this current investigation.

"Although this incident is now believed to have taken place elsewhere, I hope it illustrates to the people of Swindon that we are working hard to ensure we keep them safe.

"Since the report of this we have put some extra patrols in the area to reassure people and we would also advise people to take care on these winter nights, plan your journey home and don’t take risks with your personal safety.”
