THE National Self Build and Renovation Show kicked off in Swindon yesterday with an appearance from inaugural Big Brother winner and DIY expert Craig Phillips.

The show, one of National Self Build and Renovation Centre’s (NSBRC) biggest of the year, continues throughout today and tomorrow.

Harvey Fremlin, centre general manager, said he expected to see more than 1,000 people through the door each day.

Although the same stands remain in the centre year round, Harvey said the main difference was the specialists in place from each exhibitor presenting products to prospective home builders and renovators.

Of the 25,000 visitors each year, about half attend the special events put on by the centre.

Craig, 36, has forged a television and property career for himself off the back of his Big Brother success in 2000.

He was on hand yesterday to give a live presentation on the advantages of using Checkatrade, a directory of recommended and trusted tradesmen for whom he acts as an ambassador.

This was not the builder’s first visit to the town however, after previous appearances at this show across the past five years.

“It’s great, I do love coming to these events and speaking with the public,” he said.

“There’s also been a great opportunity for companies like Checkatrade to come in and speak face-to-face with the consumer.”
