LAWN Primary School is the training ground for the football stars of the future after its team kicked their way to the top in the Danone Cup.

The youngsters were crowned county champions in the Primary Schools’Under 11 Danone Cup Finals last week and now the school will now go onto represent Wiltshire in the south west regional finals in March.

The competition saw schools from across Wiltshire head to Stanley Park Sports Ground, in Chippenham, to compete after each team triumphed in their local finals.

Stuart Shore, who coaches the team, said: “This is a fantastic achievement for the team and the school.

“It was a tough tournament, with some great school teams competing on the day. The team are all now excited to be competing in the south west finals.”

The Danone Nations Cup, whose ambassador is world-renowned French footballer Zinedine Zidane, is the world’s biggest football tournament for children between the ages of 10 and 12.

Each year 2.5 million children take part in local, regional and national Danone Nations Cup competitions, before the winners fly off to compete in the world Final.

Shelley O’Callaghan, the mother of one of Lawn’s players, said: “The whole event was great, the sportsmanship on show from all teams was great to see.

“The weather conditions on the day were not great, however, it was worth getting cold and wet to see the smiles on the boys’ faces – they seemed to enjoy every minute of the event.”
