WORK to repair railings outside Swindon’s Central Library has been delayed while replacements are made.
It is suspected the bars outside the £10m facility were damaged by a vehicle some weeks ago, with the walkway around them fenced off for safety reasons.
A council spokesman said work had got underway at the library, which was opened by Princess Anne in May, 2009.
“We started on the repairs to the Central Library railings this week,” the spokesman said.
“We believe they were hit by a vehicle some weeks ago, which shouldn’t have been there as the railings are some distance from the highway and in an area reserved for pedestrians.
“The delay has been caused by the fact that the replacement railings had to be made by the original manufacturer to the original design – replacements aren’t available off the shelf.”
