MARION SAUVEBOIS meets musicians with broad horizons

FOR decades, Swindon Symphony Orchestra’s passionate players have broadened the town’s musical horizons with an eclectic catalogue of popular classics and lesser known melodies.

Re-established in 1989 by local musician John Birkin for a charitable concert, its roots can however be traced to the 1930s.

Now a thriving musical group, it follows very much the same ethos it did more than 20 years ago – playing to the best of members’ ability and, of course, raising funds for worthy causes.

“John re-established the orchestra for a concert raising money for a Wiltshire Youth Orchestra continental tour,” explained Sue Birley, of SSO.

“They all enjoyed it so much, it was decided to continue.

“Our goal is to enjoy playing music to a high standard, while supporting good causes, and to give audiences a local opportunity to hear music. Players include music teachers, but come from all walks of life and there is a wide age range.

“The orchestra balances its programmes with popular and less-known works, providing added interest for both players and audience.”

The audience plays a crucial role and informs the orchestra’s musical choices and direction.

“There is no point in performing without an audience,” added Sue.

“We are very keen to encourage young people and so admit them free, if accompanied by an adult.”

The orchestra, which has around 30 musicians, rehearses for six weeks before each concert, on Sundays between 2pm to 4pm, at Even Swindon Community Centre in Rodbourne.

It puts on two performances a year in March and November.

The musicians are led by Malcolm Webb, who also conducts SALOS, the Cirencester Operatic Society, and the Swindon Concert Band.

He also plays flute with the North Wilts Orchestra and the British Police Symphony Orchestra.

SSO’s next concert will take place on Sunday, March 22, at 7.30pm in St Luke’s Church, Broad Street. The show will be held in support of the Mayor’s charities, Prospect Hospice and Goldenhar Family Support.

Tickets cost £8, or £6 with concession. Accompanied children attend free. Tickets are available from Holmes Music or at the door on the night.

SSO currently has vacancies in the string and brass sections.
