TOTS are one toddle closer to getting their grip on a new play park to run around and explore after the old equipment at a Royal Wootton Bassett playground was cleared.

The popular Woodshaw Green Play Area has been closed since January to allow Royal Wootton Bassett Town Council’s Grounds Team to clear the site.

New play equipment, specially designed for toddlers, will soon be installed by nominated contractors to give the site a new lease of life.

Chairman of the amenities committee, town councillor Linda Frost, said: “We wanted to do it at this time of year when the weather wasn’t conducive to much outdoor play so we can reduce disruption.

“We don’t know yet for certain when the play park will be open since that depends on how long the equipment takes to arrive and then to be installed.

“We have cleared all the equipment from the site as well as the existing soft pore and some brambles, which has really helped to open up the site.”

As part of the refurbishment, the play area will be resurfaced and an up-to-date, multi-use piece of equipment installed.

The aim is to create an open and safe space where young children can play.

Linda said: “I think it’s important we have good play areas with suitable, high-quality equipment so that our children can play in safe and secure play areas.

“This area is going to be specifically for toddlers, not for older children. The equipment will be specifically tailored for them and appropriate for them.”

Refurbishment of the site has been long overdue, with equipment more than 20 years old.

Linda said: “It was originally built in the 1980s when the builders of the site also put in a play park for the children to enjoy.

“It was originally owned by the developer before it was handed over to the council, and we want to make sure it stays in top condition which is why we are upgrading it.”

Speaking in January, head groundsman John Macindoe said: “The area will be cleared and tidied before work really begins, making the play area more secure and attractive, giving the maple and cherry trees space to grow and flourish.

“It will also be made secure with a new wooden fence.

“The play area wasn’t originally owned by the town council but we have taken it on as part of our responsibilities and we’ve decided to upgrade it.

“There isn’t a lot available for very young children in the town so it’s been something the council have been wanting to do for a while.’’
