AS WILTSHIRE riders count down the days to the first Black Legend Sportive, we catch up with Ironman triathlete Claire Donald for advice on what - and what not - to bring for the ride on Sunday, March 22.

Setting off from Hungerford, riders can take in the Berkshire, Lambourn and Marlborough Downs on quiet country lanes passing through picturesque country villages.

But cyclists need to ensure that they are always self-sufficient and taking part in a sportive is no different.

Claire, head coach or organisers Purple Patch, helps make sure that you are fully equipped for the day with a handy check list.

  • The Essentials:

“First and foremost, don’t forget your bike! Make sure it’s roadworthy and also ensure you check the race guidelines as some events don’t allow tri-bars or other modifications," says Claire.

“Similarly, remember your helmet as you won’t be able to ride without it. Make sure it complies with any standards set out by the organiser. If you’re using clip-on pedals, then your shoes are a must – cycling in your trainers would not be ideal or that comfortable for this event!

“Bike repair kit is also a must - a tool kit, bike pump and spare inner tubes for the ride are essential. In case of an emergency, your ID and emergency race number will be vital, so make sure you have these with you. Likewise, a mobile phone and route maps can help should signs go missing or if you encounter any issues along the way.

“We all know how unpredictable the British weather can be, so make sure you’re prepared for all eventualities.

"Winter-weight gloves, overshoes, a hat and arm-warmers are needed in case of cold weather, but can be left at home if it’s going to be warm on the day. Sun cream and bike sunglasses can also make the ride so much more bearable on a hot day.

“Even though there will be food and water stations on the route, taking additional sustenance with you is important.

"Work out what food you can stash in your pockets just in case you need it and always bring two full water bottles for the ride to ensure you stay well hydrated at all times.”

  • Nice to have:

“On the day, it might also help to bring along a GPS with the route pre-loaded if possible. A mini first-aid kit, chamois cream for those uncomfortable saddle sores and wet wipes to help with chain issues are also worth a consideration.

"These items won’t mean the end of your sportive if you don’t have them, but can often make the experience that much more pleasant.”

  • Leave it in the car:

“You’ll hopefully be feeling great after completing the sportive, so to help aid recovery make sure that when you return to the car you have a set of clean warm clothes, money, a wash kit and enough post-ride recovery food and drink.

"Whilst you won’t need these during the race, these are essential for afterwards so don’t forget these either.”

With only one week to go until the big day there are just a few places left in the 45, 65 or 80-mile route options.

Entry fees range from £25 to £29 and all finishers will receive a hangman-style medal.
