Cycling isn’t the only way to get from A to B quickly and under your own steam. Have you ever thought about jogging to work?

Across Britain ‘run to work’ groups are helping people keep fit on their daily commute.

You don’t need to be the next Mo Farah to get involved. A 1.5 mile jog to work can comfortably be completed in 15 minutes without even getting too sweaty.

Of course, it you’re running a bit further a shower at the other end is always nice. Otherwise some deodorant and baby wipes can work too! If you haven’t got facilities at work why not use another means of transport to get to work then run home?

The great thing about running is that it’s so cheap, easy and doesn’t require lots of equipment. All you need is a supportive pair of trainers, pop into Run Swindon in Wood Street if you want to find the best to suit your running style. Some breathable clothing and a comfortable rucksack that will not bounce around too much are helpful too.

If you are just starting out, have a look at the NHS Couch to 5K program. By starting with alternating jogging and walking you can slowly build up strength and fitness to run further.

There are some great off-road paths to explore in Swindon. Get in touch to request a free Swindon Active Travel map – it shows all the paths and quiet routes.

Looking for some support? There are lots of friendly running clubs in Swindon such as Swindon Shin Splints, Swindon Striders, Swindon Harriers or Highworth Running Club. Or why not join Swindon Parkrun; a weekly, fun, free event organised by volunteers? It’s held at 9am every Saturday at Lydiard Park and gives everyone a chance to run 5km against the clock.

Whatever you do, get out there and collect some fresh air miles!
