IN all four corners of the globe people have been getting lost in a good book.

Rather than watching TV soaps, they've been heading down to the library or curling up on the sofa engrossed in a sci-fi thriller or a Victorian love story as part of World Book Day, which took place yesterday.

Swindon has been no exception.

At schools all over town youngsters have been reading their favourite books, while at the West Swindon library the focus wasn't just on reading but on the projects to improve reading skills and the future of libraries in the town.

Rebecca Bolton, of the West Swindon library, said: "Every World Book Day we open our doors for reading events and always get a big influx of visitors.

People are reading more and more these days, and a lot of people are eagerly awaiting the next Harry Potter book.

"TV shows like the Richard and Judy show have helped that situation, because they have a league table of the best books to read."

As well as having a look at books, library visitors could also examine plans for the new Central Library and check out their family history online.

Visitors also had the chance to find out about readers' groups in the area.
