A man took bloody revenge when his mother was attacked by a man with a baseball bat, a court heard yesterday.

Jailing Francis Rose, 21, for 32 months, a judge told him: "The use of a knife in violent assaults will not be tolerated." However Lord Hodge added: "I take account of the fact that shortly before your attack on your victim he had been carrying a baseball bat and had knocked your mother to the ground."

Victim Andrew Stewart suffered a scalp wound that severed an artery and a wound to his neck, which were described by medics as "potentially life-threatening." Rose, of Ardmaleish Road, Castlemilk, Glasgow, pled guilty to assault to danger of life.

The court heard that on March 28 last year there was a shouting match between Mr Stewart's girlfriend, Jacqueline Kilday, and Rose when she would not let him in to her home in Ardmaleish Road and she followed him down the street.

Stetson-wearing Rose waved his hat in her face and when she shouted for help Mr Stewart came on the scene, swinging a baseball bat.

Rose's mum, Margaret, shouted to her son to "get in" and he ran home. The accused's mother was struck on the head by Andrew Stewart and fell to the ground.

Later Rose saw Mr Stewart leaving his girlfriend's flat and attacked him with a knife before returning home as Mr Stewart lay bleeding.

"He shouldn't have hit my ma. He would have been alright and he wouldnae have been chopped," Rose told police.
