A FITNESS session for those in their twilight years will continue despite the NHS pulling the plug on it.

Last week, it was feared that the sessions would come to an end, after the health service decided to no longer fund classes held at the Shrivenham Memorial Hall.

The group, which is organised by Highworth Physiotherapy Clinic and Elm Tree Surgery, catered for the over 75s and was well attended, according to members.

But, having heard about the closure, saddened group members decided to put their continued fitness to good use and approached their physiotherapist Emma Overson about continuing the classes – if they paid out of their own pockets.

Following their idea, the weekly sessions, costing £7, will now carry on each Tuesday between 11.15am and 12.15pm.

“After running for six months, the NHS unfortunately decided to end the funding,” said Emma.

“The participants really enjoyed the sessions and approached me about continuing and I was happy to do so.

“It was for over 75s, who were patients of the surgery, but we’ve extended the classes to anyone over 65 now.

“I’m pleased that we can continue, as we’ve had some really good feedback and it was a big benefit to many people who weren’t previously exercising.”

At their peak, the classes were attracting 30 people and the participants are overjoyed that the group is continuing.

John Winskel, 87, attended with his wife Brenda, 88.

John said: “My wife is nearly blind, so it can be difficult for us both to get out and have exercise, so knowing that we can come here each week is great.”

Emma’s classes specialise in improving strength, stamina, balance, posture and breathing.

Bill Makin, 83, surveyed the group users after the NHS decided to cancel the sessions and was overwhelmed by the feedback and enthusiasm to keep it going.

“The vast majority wrote on the cards how upset they were,” he said.

“They felt it was a terrible shame that it might end and we are all behind continuing.

“We’ve had lots of support from Dr Crockett at Elm Tree Surgery.”
