MONOPOLY is the Mayfair of board games, according to a poll of Britain’s adults.

The game, which includes a racing car, a Scottie dog and top hat for pieces, received 39 per cent of the vote.

Scrabble came second with 10 per cent, closely followed by Cluedo, which received nine per cent.

The poll, which quizzed a total of 2,350 people, has been released to coincide with the launch of children’s charity NSPCC’s Really Big Board Game Day, which is being backed by the Swindon Advertiser.

The national event, supported by Hasbro Gaming, is calling on people from across the country to dust off their favourite childhood games and sign up for a day of play on Friday, May 15.

NSPCC’s chief executive Peter Wanless said: “Children naturally express themselves through play and it’s a great way to bring families and friends together.

“I hope workplaces, community centres, pubs and homes will be filled with the sounds of shakers, tiles and laughter for our Really Big Board Game Day.”

Mr Wanless suggests that anyone taking part makes a donation of £5 to the NSPCC, which supports children who are suffering because of domestic abuse.

It uses play therapy to help children recover from neglect and abuse.

By playing, they can make sense of what has happened to them, build their confidence and start to trust adults again.

Other games that feature in the top 10 of the poll are Trival Pursuit, chess, The Game Of Life, Risk, Hungry Hippos, Pictionary and Jenga.

Everyone who registers to take part in the charity challenge will receive a fundraising pack, with advice about organising an event in support of Really Big Board Game Day.
