AS the date of the election draws closer, all of the candidates have been touring the town taking part in various hustings events.

From charities to churches, a wide range of topics have been discussed in recent weeks, giving voters the opportunity to quiz the candidates on a range of topics.

Last week, some of the candidates went to both Swindon College to speak with students about issues affecting them.

On Wednesday, more than 100 students asked questions to North Swindon Candidates Justin Tomlinson for the Conservatives, Mark Dempsey for Labour and Poppy Hebdon-Leeder for the Green Party.

Debbie Reeve Crook, marketing manager at the college, said: “We had 120 students come to the event to see the three candidates who were given two minutes to answer on each topic before having a debate.

“It was good fun and great to see our students so engaged in politics, with so many of them registered to vote.

“The students were from across the college and in fact we were oversubscribed and had to turn some people away.

“We took a vote afterwards and Labour won, the Conservatives were second and Green third.”

There is still a chance for people to quiz all the candidates at hustings taking place tonight and tomorrow at the Wyvern theatre.

The candidates from the five main parties standing in North Swindon will be going before several hundred audience members this evening.

Tomorrow night, it will be the turn of the South Swindon candidates.

Both nights are expected to be busy but there are still tickets, all free of charge, available on the night.

The questions asked have been submitted by Swindon residents and there will an opportunity to submit more on the night.

The hustings are being held in association with the Adver and will be chaired by the editor, Gary Lawrence.

He said: “This is a fantastic opportunity for people to see first-hand the key policies and views of those looking to represent them in parliament.

“There has been a fantastic response from our readers who have submitted questions on a range of local issues.

“Each candidate will be given a short period to answer the question followed by a debate.”

Doors for the event will open at 7pm each night ahead of a 7.30pm start.

For those who are not able to attend either of the hustings then a live blog will be running throughout the evening.
