WELLY wanging, May Pole dancing and live music will all be on the bill this bank holiday weekend, with hopes the warmer weather will stick around for the festivities.

Swindon and its surrounds will be a hive of activity today through to Monday as towns and villages hold a range of events to celebrate the traditional spring holiday.

This year will also see the last ever DN1 Fest on Sunday - a celebration of techno, elctro, electronica and house music.

It will take place at Rift & Co, in Bridge Street, from noon to 1am.

A spokseman said: "Since 2008 we have showcased local music from The Bell, Lydiard Park, Old Town Bowl and Revolutions (Rift and Co).

"Every good party comes to an end and we hope that come rain or shine you will celebrate with us for one last time."

Entry to SN1 Fest costs £4 and there will be a barbecue in the afternoon.

In Highworth, residents will celebrate May Day on Saturday with the fifth May Day market jam-packed with music, entertainment and activities.

There will be stalls and fairground activities as well as a Punch and Judy Show, dancing around the May Pole, an illusionist, and live music.

A spokesman said: "It's been going for five years now, and much fun has been had by all who attend.

"Spaces found for 56 artisan and craft stalls, market, plenty of food and drink outlets, entertainment, live bands, dancing, farm animals and snakes.

"Victor the giant tortoise will be with us if it's not too cold."

Meanwhile at Roves Farm there will be a Welly Wanging Competition in aid of Swindon Guide Dogs for the Blind on Saturday(May2).

From 11am people can do their best to throw their welly the furthest to be in for a prize.

Alan Fletcher, chairman of Swindon Guide Dogs, said: "Come along and see some of our working guide dogs and the newly born lambs at the farm. Swindon Guide Dogs will have a stall and will be having a Kiddies Tombola, Kiddies Lucky Bags, Dog Treats."

Those venturing further afield to Wanborough will also be in for a teat when they are greeted by dozens of storybook characters s year's Scarecrow Trail.

The theme for this year's event is stories and poems and scarecrows have popped up against houses and lampposts as part of the annual event, which launched on Saturday (APR 25), with families being encouraged to spot as many as they can before the trail ends on May 10.

Tessa Lanstein, who organised the trail, said: "It's a really popular event that brings the whole of the community together.

"We've about 50 families around the village who have made scarecrows this year and the Scouts have got involved as well.

"It grows more and more popular every year that we do it. It's particularly popular on the May Day bank holiday, which is also when we hold the Wanborough May Day Fayre."

There will be all sorts of different activities during the fayre, which will take place from noon to 4pm, including a lucky dip. bouncy castle, stalls, crafts and refreshments.
